Welcome to the Local Area Guide for Sunbury-on-Thames

The town of Sunbury-on-Thames (known locally as Sunbury) is located along the River Thames, halfway between Staines and Kingston. Originally a small hamlet, the town has expanded to include two residential areas, Lower Sunbury and Sunbury Common.

The town has been dated back to the Bronze Age and was listed in the Doomsday book as having a population of 21 people. It is believed to have been named after the Saxon Chief 'Sunna' who setup a settlement along the riverside.

Sunbury Common is a busy hub of activity. Its location at the start of the M3 makes it a major interchange between Staines, Kingston, London and Southampton. Lower Sunbury on the other hand, is substantially quieter and more pleasant, offering a lovely riverside frontage.
