Academy (City) School
This type of school can best be described as an independent
state school. The schools' facilities are paid for through
Private Sponsorships, whilst its running costs are met by
the Department of Education & Skills.

City Technology College
This was a fore-runner to Academy Schools. The CTC costs are
paid partly by Private Sponsorship and partly by central government.
Their independent status allows them focus on technology or
arts as well as delivering the National Curriculum.

Community School (similar to former County Schools)
This type of school is managed by the LEA. It employs the
staff, owns the facilities and manages the Admission Policy.

Community Special School
This is the special school equivalent of a Community school.
It caters for pupils with statutory statements

Foundation School
Similar to a Voluntary Aided School. A Governing Body employs

are either owned by the Governing Body or a charitable
organisation.

caters for pupils with statutory statements
of special educational needs.

Further Education Sector Institution
This is either a 6th Form, Further Education or a Tertiary
college.

This type of school is a fee paying establishment.

Independent School Special School
This is a fee paying establishment that provides teaching
to pupils with a statement of special educational need or
who is in public care.

Ministry of Defense Funded College
This is a college funded by the Ministry of Defence.
|

| NMSS |
Non-Maintained Special School
This is a non-profit making independent school which is run
by a Governing Body. The school provides specialist teaching
which is funded by charging, normally the LEA, for each pupil.

Voluntary Aided School (similar to former Aided Schools)
This type of school has a Governing Body who is employs the
staff and manages the Admission Policy. The facilities are
normally owned by a charitable organisation and the LEA may
own some of the land.

Voluntary Controlled School (similar to former Controlled Schools)
This type of school is a cross between a Community school
and a Voluntary Aided school. The LEA employs the staff and
controls the Admissions Policy, whilst the facilities are
normally owned by a charity.

Takes pupils depending on their ability and aptitude.
